Part Two

Chapter Nine

Earth's atmosphere has greatly eroded, and our Ozone Layer has been depleted, making it harmful to be outside for long periods of time. We must cover our bodies completely, ensuring our skin is never naked under the sun's powerful rays.

Even so, radiation still penetrates clothing. Every night, we must apply the cooling balm to detoxify our epidermis and add a layer of protection, not to mention keeping it supple. If we skip even one night, our skin will begin to peel and bubble, and the eruptions are painful and lethal. We must take care of it because we only have one.

The alarm rings through my apartment, alerting me to a new morning and another day of existence. My eyes open, and I look above my bed, seeing the etchings of my name on the wall. I did it the first night I spent here in my own place, a reminder of the person I wanted to be and pride for what I had accomplished. I love waking up every day and seeing it.

I head to the bathroom and prepare myself for the day. I brush my teeth, reaching far back inside my mouth, scrubbing every tooth, and then scraping the back of the brush against my tongue, the bristles hitting my throat and tickling me.

Next, I brush my long, luxurious hair, the color like molten lava, so bright against my pale pallor. The tresses hang down my back, the tips touching the top of my buttocks and slightly curling at the ends. I lean forward and run my finger over my eyebrows, the color the exact shade of my hair, along with my eyelashes, giving me a unique appearance. Not many have my hair color, and I am proud of it. It's not the only unique part of my body, I muse as I blink my long, copper lashes. My eyes are two different colors, one golden and the other a bright sky blue.

It wasn't by choice; I was born this way. I get much attention for it, and many male suitors call upon me, hoping I will invite them to share our lives, even if it is for one night only. Some of them I refuse, but I am human and have needs. So, some I give a night to.

Just a night.

I quickly twist my hair up and begin to dress, pulling on my reflective leggings and a long-sleeved fitted shirt. Next, I grab my long, reflective poncho and pull the large hood over my head, leaving my gloves and silicone mask for the end. Once I am ready to leave my apartment, I will head toward my job, which is about five minutes from my place of residence. We are all placed in homes close to where we work to prevent tragedy. Our numbers are already dangerously low, and reproduction is nearly impossible.

We need a miracle.

I step out of my apartment and head toward the elevator, hoping I don't see Samuel again today. He's been trying to pair me up with his friend who lives in our building, and I am just not interested.
